Zusammenfassung

Die ligamentäre Verletzung des Sprunggelenkes ist nach wie vor die häufigste Verletzung im Sport und in der Freizeit (Cox 1985). Nach Renström und Theis (1993) beträgt die Inzidenz in den USA etwa 23000 Verletzungen pro Tag. Garrick und Requa (1973) zeigten bei 1650 High-School-Studenten, daß diese Verletzung bei allen Sportarten außer beim Schwimmen und Tennis am häufigsten auftrat. Beim Basketball betrafen sogar 53% aller Verletzungen das Sprunggelenk. Bestätigung fanden diese Ergebnisse in den Folgeuntersuchungen (Garrick und Requa 1988), in denen über 7,5 Jahre 19 unterschiedliche Sportarten beobachtet wurden.
