Summary

The first modern shoulder arthroplasty with an anatomic shape was implanted by Krueger in 1950. The modern era of shoulder replacement dawned with the pioneering work of Neer, who in 1953 laid the foundations for our current knowledge of the indications, surgical technique, rehabilitation and results of shoulder replacement. During this time a number of designs emerged in both Europe and the United States addressing the problem of the absent rotator cuff by replacing the complete articulation with a linked prosthesis. The disappointing results of these designs led to a generally held view of the lack of success of shoulder replacement and rekindled an interest in alternative methods of treatment. An enormous number of designs, sometimes radically different from one another, have appeared, such as bipolar prostheses, surface replacements, and components made from other biomaterials. However, the recent development of modular components has rekindled the possibility of a prosthesis of truly anatomical design as envisaged by Krueger 45 years ago.
