Intestinal Bacterial Infections

Tropical Pathology

Abstract

Escherichia coli has long been recognised as a major cause of diarrhoea but new technologies only recently enabled the definition of pathogenetic mechanisms and the causative agents more precisely. All E. coli possess somatic (O) antigens. Most, but not all, are motile organisms and therefore also have flagellar (H) antigens. These two antigens form the basis of the E. coli serotyping system. In addition, these bacteria elaborate a variety of virulence factors which confer distinctive pathophysiological properties.
