Abstract

The strict definition of the tropics (i. e. the surface of the earth between Cancer and Capricorn) has not been adhered to in this review. It has been enlarged to include countries or parts of countries in the subtropics where disease patterns, even those of an infective nature, are similar to those in the tropics proper. The countries of the Third World are nearly all to be found in the tropics but when the health problems of the Third World are being discussed I have taken the liberty of including some non-tropical countries, in an attempt to present a more comprehensive discussion of issues like genetics services and the interrelationships of First and Third World health. The large-scale migrations of peoples from the Third to the First World which has been a feature of post-World War II history has encouraged me to make excursions into the topic of the genetic health of so-called minority populations now living in the developed world, in the belief that such studies will shed light on genetic diseases in the tropics.
