Abstract

Renal diseases prevalent in developed Western countries are also seen in tropical countries, but these latter countries have their own special problems usually associated with parasitic infections. In some tropical countries the commonest cause of nephrotic syndrome is infection by Plasmodium malariae (Kibukamusoke 1984). In parts of Africa and South America, hepatosplenic schistosomiasis may be associated with glomerulonephritis (Sinniah et al. 1988). Infections are still major diseases in the tropics, due to a combination of socioeconomic problems and malnutrition. Therefore immune complexes play a major role in the pathogenesis of tropical renal diseases. This chapter will highlight some of these renal diseases, and not dwell on idiopathic renal diseases such as minimal change disease, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy and metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus which are major causes of renal disease in Western countries. The literature is extensive in this area, and the various pathological lesions have been documented in various textbooks of renal pathology and International Classifications of Renal Diseases (Churg and Sobin 1982; Churg et al. 1984).
