Abstract
Former studies have identified effects of so-called radical technological change — which should be referred to as ‘technology shocks’ — as being critical to company success and eventually determining survival in the corporate world. Many approaches have been taken to characterize technological change and its effect on companies’ competitiveness. This chapter summarizes current streams of thought on this topic, which are used to select the most appropriate forms of categorization. A framework for identifying severe technology shocks can then be created.
