Abstract
The term cardiac replacement therapy until recently was limited to cardiac transplantation. Indeed, the term only evolved as significant innovations were made in the development and implementation of cardiac assist systems as well as xenotransplantation programs. Longterm implantable left-ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are currently in use throughout the world with increasing frequency. The current accepted role for these devices is as a bridge to transplantation; however, as experience is gained with use of these devices, other applications may be feasible and desirable.
