Single Shot, Laser Plasma X-Ray Contact Microscopy of Chlamydomonas

Abstract

Images of living green alga chlamydomonas were obtained using shoft X-rays in the water window (2.3–4.4 nm). The specimen was placed on a photoresist, which acts as the recording medium. Successful biological imaging is based on the different absorption caused by water and the carbon-rich proteins of the living biological specimens. Atomic force and scanning electron microscopy of the biological image clearly showed the flagella and flagella intersections of the motile green alga, Chlamydomonas, recorded in the photoresist suggesting a lateral resolution better than 150nm.
