Abstract
On a global scale, the freshwater mussels Unionoidea have declined dramatically. About 1000 species, from tropical to polar climates, are being subjected to serious habitat degradation through dredging, pollution, sedimentation and similar anthropogenic impacts (Neves 1997). In the Northern Hemisphere, the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera L.) possesses a holarctic distribution, having colonized coldwater rivers and streams cohabited by fishes of the Salmonidae.
