Abstract

The sudden interruption of arterial blood flow by an acute embolic or thrombotic occlusion, unless promptly recognized and treated, is almost certain to cause irreversible damage to the organ supplied by the obstructed artery. Fortunately, the threatened organ can be salvaged in most cases by early diagnosis, an accurate differential diagnosis, and prompt, appropriate surgical and conservative treatment [31, 100, 112, 115, 140].
