Abstract

This paper describes a method for recognition of branches of pulmonary artery (BPA) and vein (BPV) in 3-D chest X-ray CT images by using anatomical positional relations of pulmonary vessels. BPA and BPV should be recognized separately, because each BPA or BPV distributes from the hilar part to the peripheral part keeping connectivity. This paper tries to demonstrate potential possibility of automated recognition of BPA and BPV. Basically the proposed method extracts BPA and BPV separately by region growing from the hilar part. Seed points for growing are calculated by using two features: (a) specific BPA, BPV and bronchi (BR) keep steady positional relations on the particular slices (key slices) and (b) the BPA run along with the BR. The seed points for growing are calculated based on these features. The BPA and BPV are extracted by region growing with special growing kernels, which are designed to prevent misextraction. We applied the proposed method to chest X-ray CT images. The experimental result shows the method can extract the BPA and BPV satisfactorily.
