Abstract
The Nabarlek uranium mine commenced mining operations in May 1979 and ceased milling in 1988. It was retained on care and maintenance status from 1988 until decommissioning earthworks were completed during 1994 and 1995. The company gave only generalised commitments to rehabilitation in its EIS, and although this was noted, it was not identified as a serious problem by those who provided comments. A decommissioning working group was unable to agree on a revegetation standard for the mine and an independent expert was appointed be the arbiter of revegetation success. The expert’s 1999 report was rejected by some stakeholders and in 2002 the company remains unaware of what will be required to achieve close out and relinquishment of its lease.
