Abstract
Young theoretical physicists or chemists nowadays cannot escape Walter Kohn’s influence. Density-functional theory, created by an almost mythical figure occasionally glimpsed by the lucky ones, is everywhere. Those of us roughly contemporaneous with Walter have been even more strongly affected. During our decades-long struggle to understand more deeply the electron theory of atoms, molecules and condensed matter and to convert that understanding into quantitative descriptive tools with predictive power, we found over and over again that it was Walter who led the way, lifting the veils and shaping our subsequent thought. It was certainly true in my case.
