Zusammenfassung

Die Epidemiologie befasst sich mit der Verteilung von Krankheiten in Raum und Zeit und mit Faktoren, die diese Verteilung beeinflussen. In diesem Kapitel werden einige wichtige Begriffe der Epidemiologie definiert und erläutert. Häufig interessiert sich die Epidemiologie für Häufigkeit und Verteilung bestimmter Erkrankungen in kompletten Populationen (z. B. Bevölkerung). Da aber Kompletterhebungen in großen Populationen sehr aufwändig sind, wird(werden) häufig eine (oder mehrere) Stichprobe(n) gezogen, die für die zugrundeliegende Population repräsentativ sein soll. Weitere wichtige Begriffe der Epidemiologie sind Prävalenz, Inzidenz und Mortalitätsraten. Bei einem Thema wie Essstörungen interessiert auch die Veränderung der Prävalenz und Inzidenz und Mortalität über die Zeit.
