Abstract
The evaluation of the activities of hospitals in the FRG is based on patients diagnoses as encoded at transfer or discharge. Therefore the accuracy and reliability of the results of the semiautomatic encoding system for discharge diagnoses has to be verified. The system is integrated into the patient administration system of the Medical System Hannover (MSH) at the Medical School Hannover (MHH). It has been well accepted by the users. First results showed a 96.8 % of diagnoses which were encoded and that most of the non-encoded diagnoses can be processed with the involvement of the physician. The improvement of data quality has been validated by comparing manual and semi-automatical encoding. The validation of the data using blinded techniques showed an 84 % of correctness.
