Abstract

The year 1977 was the bicentennial of Gauss’s birth; 1980 marks the 125th anniversary of his death. Thus, Gauss was formed by experiences that go very far back, to the now remote world of the 18th and the first decades of the 19th century. These times can no longer be understood easily.
