Zusammenfassung

Der Befruchtungsvorgang ist eine fein aufeinander abgestimmte Sequenz physiologischer Ereignisse, die zur Fusion zweier Keimzellen und damit zur Entwicklung eines neuen Individuums führen. Störungen an nur einer Stelle dieses komplexen Geschehens führen unweigerlich zur ungewollten Kinderlosigkeit. Einige der häufigsten Ursachen von Ehesterilität sind funktionelle Störungen der männlichen Samenzelle. Bei etwa 40–50% der Ehen mit unerfülltem Kinderwunsch sind die Ursachen beim Mann zu suchen [23]. Dabei sind unsere Möglichkeiten, defekte Spermatozoenfunktionen zu diagnostizieren oder gar zu therapieren, noch äußerst gering. Eine genaue Kenntnis der molekularen Mechanismen, die zur Befruchtung einer Eizelle führen, ist daher Voraussetzung für die Entwicklung neuer funktioneller diagnostischer Methoden zur Erfassung männlicher Fertilitätsstörungen. Wenn es gelingt, eine Funktionsstörung des Spermatozoons genau aufzuklären, können die zugrundeliegende Ätiologie und Lokalisation des Defektes innerhalb eines Organs wie beispielsweise des Hodens oder Nebenhodens bestimmt werden. Erst dann können sinnvolle Methoden zur Therapie männlicher Infertilität entwickelt werden.
