Abstract

To make realistic, or otherwise interesting, images of objects, it is necessary to find the position and orientation of the surfaces of those objects. To do this, the surfaces must be defined in a way convenient for algorithms which calculate shading from surface orientation, and priority (for determining the visible surfaces) from surface position. We will look first at structures in which to store surface description data, then at geometrical calculations for clipping and intersecting surfaces, then at methods for producing shape descriptions, and finally at algorithms for computing surface priority.
