Abstract
The location in the central nervous system of the respiratory rhythm is now well established. Indeed, elimination of ventilation related sensory inputs does not abolish the respiratory rhythm. Transection experiments delimit the location of the respiratory rhythm generator to the lower brainstem. The question actually under debate is: how is the respiratory rhythm generated ? (7)
