Zusammenfassung
Die Verwendung von sterilisierten Insekten zur Herabsetzung oder völliger Ausrottung ganzer Insektenpopulationen ist eines der interessantesten Kapitel moderner Entomologie 1). Vor allem in USA wurden in den letzten 20 Jahren bahnbrechende Erkenntnisse auf diesem Gebiet gewonnen. Die theoretischen Grundlagen für die Verwendung der Sterilisation zur Vernichtung von Insektenstämmen sind von Knipling 2)in den Jahren von 1937 bis 1955 erarbeitet worden. Kniplingzeigt, daß die Sterilisation eines größeren Teils der natürlichen Population eine schnellere und gründlichere Reduktion der Gesamtpopulation ergibt als bei der Anwendung von konventionellen Insektiziden. Dieser prinzipielle Vorteil über Insektizide, die nur abtöten, sei an folgendem Beispiel erläutert:
Nehmen wir an, durch die Anwendung eines konventionellen Insektizids werden 90% der Insekten einer Population erreicht, daß heißt, 90 männliche und 90 weibliche Insekten von jeweils 100 werden getötet. Die entkommenen 10 Weibchen kopulieren mit den entkommenen 10 Männchen, und es resultieren 10 befruchtete Weibchen, welche die nächste Generation produzieren. Werden dagegen mit einem Sterilans 90% einer Population erreicht, so werden 90 von 100 Weibchen sterilisiert. Die noch fruchtbaren 10 entkommenen Weibchen können in Konkurrenz von 10 normalen mit 90 sterilen Männchen kopulieren. Aus diesem Verhältnis resultiert nur einfruchtbares Weibchen, daß mit nur einem nicht sterilen Männchen die nächste Generation aufbaut. Bei vielen Insektenspezies kopulieren die Weibchen nur einmal (z.B. bei Cochliomyia hominivorax, „screw worm“), jedoch auch bei Arten, die mehrfach kopulieren, bleibt das Reproduktionsverhältnis immer noch ungünstig.
