Mechanism of Action

Part of the book series: Antibiotics ((ANTIBIOTICS,volume 1))

Abstract

The antibiotic, vancomycin, was isolated in the Eli Lilly Company laboratories from a Streptomyces species found in soil obtained in Borneo and India. This organism, which is also found in domestic soils, has been described by Pittenger and Brigham (1956), who the named it Streptomyces orientalis. The hydrochloride of this antibiotic bears the trade name Vancocin.
