Zusammenfassung
Die Kikuyu leben im Hochland von Kenya östlich des Ostafrikanischen Grabens zwischen dem Mount Kenya im Norden und der Massaisteppe im Süden. Ihr Siedlungsgebiet liegt 1500–2000 m hoch und hat deshalb trotz Äquatornähe ein temperiertes Klima mit reichlichen, wenn auch nicht immer zuverlässigen Niederschlägen, die sich im wesentlichen auf zwei Regenzeiten — von Oktober bis Dezember und von März bis Mai — konzentrieren. Die Böden, leichte vulkanische Verwitterungserde, gehören zu den fruchtbarsten von ganz Ostafrika. Das Bodenrelief ist sehr bewegt: langgestreckte Hügelrücken und tief eingeschnittene Täler wechseln in rhythmischer Folge miteinander ab.
