Abstract

The early development (blastulation) of sand dollar embryos will be illustrated with a color movie film. Methods used to obtain a quantitative three-dimensional description of the process in single living animals will be reviewed. These include: (1) photomicrography of serial optical sections, (2) digitization of photographic contours and (3) computation of spatial parameters. The results of a preliminary study will be reported and some problems for the future outlined. A paper describing the working has been submitted to the Journal of Microscopy.
