Zusammenfassung
Die Atemluft ist mit mikrobiellen Erregern, Allergenen, Schmutzpartikeln und mit Fremdgasen belastet, die die Integrität der Atemwege und der Lunge bedrohen. Je nach Partikelgröße werden feste Substanzen in der Nase oder in den Atemwegen abgefangen, zum Pharynx transportiert, verschluckt und durch das lymphatische System des Darms als Antigene verarbeitet. Partikel von weniger als einem Mikrometer verhalten sich in der Regel wie Fremdgase und werden nicht deponiert, sondern wieder ausgeatmet.
