Immunology of Aging

Abstract

The extent of immunosenescence varies among individuals depending on several factors, including genetics, environment, lifestyle, and nutrition. The concept of nutrition as a modifiable factor with widespread influence on the immune system has established the foundation of the immunonutrition. Immunosenescence can be classified into three categories in regard to nutritional status including primary immunosenescence, secondary immunosenescence, and tertiary immunosenescence. Nutritional status, itself, depends on several factors in the elderly, and three main categories of physical, psychological, and social factors are responsible for susceptibility of the elderly to undernutrition. All these factors should be assessed in order to accurately evaluate nutritional status which is essential for successful immunonutrition in the elderly. This chapter will review the effect of nutritional status on immunosenescence in the elderly along with thorough assessment of nutritional status and contributory factors to undernutrition in the elderly. Also we will review immunonutrition options as one of the cost-effective approaches to delay immunosenescence.
