Abstract
The family Methermicoccaceae currently consists of a single genus with a single species: Methermicoccus shengliensis. The type strain was isolated from the Shengli offshore oil field in China located at a depth of 1,680–1,800 m below the sea floor, at an in situ temperature of 75–80 °C. It is affiliated with the order Methanosarcinales, but unlike many other members of the order, it is unable to grow on acetate as an energy source. Methane is produced from methanol and from methylated amines. The cells are motile cocci and grow optimally at neutral pH at 65 °C. Methermicoccus is the first reported thermophilic methylotrophic methanogen.
