Abstract

As a prelude to our study of quantum black holes, in this chapter we briefly review some of the key features of black holes in general relativity. We focus on specific examples of black hole metrics in four and higher space-time dimensions, which will be needed later in the book. The chapter closes with the laws of black hole mechanics, which raise a curious analogy with the laws of thermodynamics.
