Definition

Recent progress has been reviewed in structure analytical techniques of crystalline polymers by focusing on the wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scatterings (WAXD and SAXS, respectively), wide-angle neutron diffraction (WAND), and FTIR spectroscopy. In the analysis of static structure of polymer crystals, the utilization of synchrotron-sourced high-energy X-ray beam with shorter wavelength allowed us to collect one order higher number of diffraction spots, from which even the hydrogen atomic positions were extracted accurately. The application of 2-dimensional WAND method using a highly sensitive imaging plate detector has lead to more reliable determination of hydrogen (deuterium) positions than before. This accurate crystal structure information has made it possible to estimate the reliable anisotropic mechanical property, which may be an important guiding principle for the development of new polymers with more excellent bulk property. The combination of WAXD, SAXS, and...
