Benperidol is a typical antipsychotic. It has primarily been used for the treatment of deviant antisocial sexual behavior but can also be used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia. Benperidol is a high-affinity D2 dopamine receptor antagonist and belongs to a drug class called the butyrophenones. Side effects associated with benperidol are similar to other typical antipsychotics and include anxiety, depression, extrapyramidal motor symptoms, drowsiness, tachycardia, arrhythmia, hypotension, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and hyperprolactinemia. Benperidol is not approved for use in the United States.
