Introduction

The reliable determination of earthquakes source moment tensor and of its uncertainty is of key importance for both geodynamic investigation and seismic hazard assessment.

The knowledge of the focal mechanism (i.e., fault plane solution) in fact provides essential indications about the kind of rupture process affecting the fault and thus, besides the event’s strength (i.e., seismic moment and magnitude), gives a first-order description of the local stress field acting on the fault. This information can be used not only to constrain geodynamic interpretations relying on seismological and geophysical data modeling but also as an input in deterministic seismic hazard analysis (DSHA or NDSHA, Panza et al. 2012), providing the depth of the fault and its style of dominant displacement. The information provided by moment tensor inversion may enter as an input even in the probabilistic seismic hazard...
