Introduction

Issues pertaining to the dynamic behavior of mixed in-height structures, and more specifically concrete-steel buildings, are presented. The term “mixed structures” denotes here buildings that consist of a lower and an upper part with different dynamic response characteristics. When such structures are subjected to a dynamic excitation, e.g., an earthquake, they respond in a different way than more uniform structures; thus, their dynamic analysis and seismic design must account for these peculiarities.

The dissimilarity in the dynamic response characteristics of the two parts can be due to several factors. It may occur due to different lateral force resisting systems in the upper and lower part, or it might be the result of the action of seismic isolation or energy dissipation devices.
