Abstract

Due to the presence of Phrasal verbs in an English text, the English to Kannada machine translation poses a great challenge. It is because of ambiguous nature of the Phrasal verbs. Each Phrasal verb may have more than one equivalent Kannada translation depending on the context in which it appears. Phrasal verbs are the commonly occurring feature of English and comprise a verb followed by a particle(s). Phrasal verbs have highly context dependent meaning and may be disambiguated only by devising a method involving utilization of semantic information pertaining to the context. The present paper describes the semantic based disambiguation method for ambiguous Phrasal verbs sense disambiguation using hybrid example based approach. It is an essential task for getting the good quality output during English to Kannada Machine Translation. Experiments are conducted and the results obtained are described. The performance of the proposed method is reliable and extendable.
