Abstract

David Dewhurst, Australia’s first biomedical engineer, attended the first ICMBE in Paris, in 1959, and his involvement and enthusiasm kick-started Australia’s long and active involvement in the activities of the IFMBE. Australia joined the Federation in 1967, and David was an early member of the Administrative Council. In 1971, under his Presidency, Melbourne hosted the 9th ICMBE. Then in 1989, Melbourne hosted the 2nd IFMBE Pan-Pacific Conference, and in 2003, the World Congress was held in Sydney.
