Definition
Synthesis of poly(phenylene oxide) and poly(phenylene sulfide) and their polymer properties.
Background
Poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO), which is sometimes called poly(phenylene ether) (PPE), and poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) are practically important and widely used as high performance engineering plastics. The synthetic reactions of both belong to a typical type of condensation polymerization via step-growth pathways. The polymerization reaction of the former is unique, known as an oxidative coupling polymerization. Proceedings of these synthesis reactions are briefly described. Important property data and applications of these polymers are also given.
