Definition

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is any mechanical force applied to the cranial vault that causes external or internal damage to the brain. Primary brain injury is one that occurs at the moment of impact, and is characterized by mechanical damage. Secondary brain injury is characterized by a cascade of pathological processes (biochemical, inflammatory, and cytotoxic) that are initiated at the time of onset of injury but may progress and present at a later period in time. This entry focuses on management of patients with intracranial injury for intracranial procedures; similar goal should be used when treating TBI patients for extracranial surgery
