Abstract

Tinnitus is the phantom noise affecting about 10 % of adults. Tinnitus significantly decreases the quality of life and although it is per se not a life-threatening condition, it was shown to either directly lead to suicide (Pridmore et al. 2012) or to accompany conditions leading to suicide (Mitchell et al. 2015; Pridmore et al. 2012; Seo et al. 2015). The incidence of tinnitus increases with age and accompanies all forms of hearing loss (Drexler et al. 2016; Joo et al. 2015; Mazurek et al. 2010; Zarenoe and Ledin 2014; Zeman et al. 2014; Zirke et al. 2013). The tinnitus-related public awareness is increasing, and the decision-makers on the political and industrial levels have recognized the need of systematic studies aiming at finding a cure for tinnitus. However, an effective animal model that would enable preclinical studies is necessary. The purpose of this article is to describe the contemporary methods and models used in basic and preclinical tinnitus research.
