Abstract

Cytology of benign lesions and cholangio-/hepatocellular disorders of equivocal malignant potential is presented in the first section. All variants of hepatocellular carcinoma, and neuroendocrine neoplasms are main topics in the malignant section. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of immunocytochemical analyses in order to differentiate hepatocellular carcinoma from other primary liver tumors and to classify metastatic adenocarcinomas.

Cytodiagnostic algorithms of benign, equivocal and malignant findings in liver aspirates and respective differential diagnoses are additionally presented in synoptic setups.
