Abstract
A first section covers fine needle aspiration techniques, aspects of sample processing, basic aspects of ancillary analyses including a synopsis of CD-markers, and architecture and cytology of normal lymph nodes.
Cytologic criteria of common benign lymphoid disorders are presented in section 2.
The third section primarily focuses on basic diagnostic rules regarding malignant lymphoid disorders, and comprises (1) comprehensive cytologic description of the most important varieties of malignant lymphomas and myeloproliferative disorders, and (2) consideration on histiocytic sarcoma. For each entity, special attention is paid to immunophenotyping and molecular genetic studies. Furthermore, a table is included which displays common non-lymphoid immunocyto-chemical tumor cell markers and their diagnostic use on metastatic disease.
Cytodiagnostic algorithms of benign and malignant lymphoid lesions and their respective differential diagnoses are additionally presented in synoptic setups.
