Surgical Treatment of Osteochondral Defect with Mosaicplasty Technique

Abstract

The surgical treatment of osteochondral defect could have the choice between the techniques where the objectives are to obtain a repairing with a simple healing of the defect, and the techniques where the aims are to regenerate the cartilage with hyaline cartilage. In this last category, the most usual procedure is mosaicplasty, which has a limited indication. The first message is to avoid this kind of treatment for superficial lesion and non-symptomatic lesion and also for osteoarthritis’ lesion. Secondly, this surgical technique is a very demanding procedure. The follow-up is now sufficient to appreciate the stability of results in time, the low morbidity on the donor site, but not sufficient to evaluate the action that decreases the risk of osteoarthrosis. The usual results after this procedure are more than 85% A or B, with a low cost as well as on the knee than on the ankle.
