Abstract
The safe and efficient operation of the transport system is a fundamental national requirement. This in turn depends on a wide range of analysis and modelling tools that are used in the planning, operation and management of transport systems and in the development and delivery of transport services. These analysis and modelling tools have historically been constrained by data that are severely limited in terms of their spatial, temporal and semantic granularity. We are now however, entering a period in which this datascape is undergoing profound change, with rich new types of data becoming available in unprecedented volumes. The new transport datascape will drive innovation in modelling and analysis tools and new transport systems and services. The aim of this presentation is to discuss the changing nature of the transport datascape and highlight the range of new opportunities that are emerging. The discussion will be illustrated with examples drawn from current projects being undertaken at Imperial College London.
