Definition

Anions are atoms or molecules that have gained an electron (e.g., CN−, OH−, C4H−). Neutral molecules with large electron affinities (EA’s) can attach an electron in a variety of chemical reactions, such as photo attachment. Long carbon-chain molecules have large EA values and C6H− was the first anion discovered in the interstellar medium in 2006.
