Abstract
Online assessments gain increasing importance in university education. The use of multiple media in digital assessment systems not only allows the review of factual knowledge, but adds the assessment of competence levels and the decision-making processes of students.
Starting in 2001, we developed the Online Examination System ’OES’ (German: Online Prüfungssystem ’OPS’). First university assessments took place in 2003. Since then, more than 5,000 students were assessed with the OPS and more than 100,000 personal industrial assessments have been conducted.
In this communication, main advantages and disadvantages of electronic assessments are collected and discussed with their pros and cons in order to support a decision finding process when and under which circumstances paper based assessments can be replaced with electronic assessments.
