Abstract

As a new video compression standard, H.264/AVC greatly improves compression efficiency at the expense of computational complexity. While careful hardware design enables the fast execution of H.264/AVC, generic architectures utilize serial processing with increased power consumption. This paper presents an efficient parallel processing structure for H.264/AVC 4×4 intra prediction. A new processing order is introduced to reduce data dependencies between consecutively executed blocks within H.264/AVC intra prediction. Our experimental results show that the parallel execution of these blocks saves power consumption by up to 22.8% with slight increase in bit rate.
