Definition
The prostatitis syndrome is one of the most common entities encountered in urologic practice. Classification of the prostatitis syndrome is based on the clinical presentation of the patient, the presence or absence of inflammatory markers, and/or bacteria in localizing samples, such as the expressed prostatic secretion. Depending upon the duration of symptoms, prostatitis is described as either acute or, where symptoms are present for at least 3 months, chronic.
In accordance with the classification of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the prostatitis syndrome is classified into four categories [1].
Acute bacterial prostatitis (ABP), category I
ABP is characterized by severe obstructive and irritative symptoms of the lower respiratory tract, pain in the area of the prostate, and acute bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI), with systemic involvement.
