Die Endokrinologie der Schwangerschaft befasst sich mit 2 Individuen, die sich schon in der Übergangsphase von der Befruchtung bis zur Nidation gegenseitig beeinflussen, Energie sowie zahlreiche Informationssignale austauschen und sich nach der Plazentation hierfür eines nur für wenige Monate funktionsfähigen Organs, der Plazenta, bedienen. Diese passagere fetoplazentare-maternale Funktionseinheit wird im Folgenden beschrieben.
