Abstract
ThePneumocystis infecting humans, once calledPneumocystis carinii, is now calledPneumocystis jiroveci (pronounced “yee-row-vetsee”).P. carinii now refers toPneumocystis from other host species. It is now clear thatPneumocystis from humans and other animals are quite different and that there are multiple species in the genus. Analysis of protein sizes has shown that the organism tends to be host-specific (Stringer et al. 2002). Changing the name of the organism does not preclude using the acronym PCP (Pneumocystis pneumonia).
