Definition
Phenomenon used to describe the differential binding of antibody to antigen immediately outside of a vascular wall (vascularized tumor) or in the periphery of a tumor (preangiogenic tumor). The differential binding is thought to be due to very high affinities of the antibody-antigen complex and due to nonspecific binding of normal tissue. Antibodies, therefore, do not move quickly “off” of the antigen and therefore do not penetrate into the tumor to any meaningful extent.
