Neurodermitis ist die häufigste chronische Hauterkrankung im Säuglings- und Kindesalter. Die ansteigenden Prävalenzraten unter Schulkindern haben die Aufmerksamkeit stärker auf die spezifischen Probleme der Betroffenen gelenkt. Neben psychischen Belastungsfaktoren stellen das Kratzen und die Eltern-Kind-Interaktion die wichtigsten Faktoren in der Aggravation und Aufrechterhaltung der Hauterscheinungen dar. Die Suche nach Auslösern, Diäten oder anderen aufwendigen Maßnahmen, um die Hauterscheinungen unter Kontrolle zu bringen, erfordert große Anstrengungen. Es resultieren häufig Erschöpfung, Überforderung, Ratlosigkeit und Hilflosigkeit. Ohne adäquate professionelle Hilfe für die betroffenen Kinder und Jugendlichen sowie deren Eltern kann die Neurodermitis zu extremen Beeinträchtigungen der Lebensqualität führen. Bei einem Teil der Patienten verursachen die Belastungsfaktoren psychische Probleme und Störungen, die eine verhaltenstherapeutische Behandlung notwendig machen.
