Essen ist eine lebensnotwendige menschliche Aktivität, die dazu dient, die nötigen Energiereserven für die Bewältigung der Alltagsanforderungen bereitzustellen. Essen ist weiter eine soziale Aktivität, die mehrmals täglich stattfindet und die Möglichkeit bietet, mit dem näheren Umfeld, der Familie, Freunden, Lebenspartnern zusammenzukommen, sich zu entspannen, zu genießen und sich beim Essen auszutauschen. Essen in der westlichen Welt ist weniger mit dem Problem der Nahrungsbeschaffung, als mit der Aufgabe verbunden zu entscheiden, was, wann, wo und wie viel gegessen werden soll. Das Thema Essen erreicht in der heutigen Zeit viel öffentliches Interesse und umfasst sowohl die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema einer ausgewogenen und gesunden Ernährung als auch mit dem Thema der Figur und des Gewichtes.
