Abstract

A location service for an ad hoc or sensor network is an algorithm that on the input of a node’s network identifier returns as its output this node’s physical location. A location service sits between the similar sounding concepts of localization or positioning, which is treated in Chapter 15, i.e., how a node determines its own position (e.g., by using GPS or triangulation relative to other nodes), and location-based services, i.e., services that need to be aware of the client’s location (e.g., restaurant or gas station recommender systems). A similar, but different problem is the selection of the most conveniently located node.
